The Colours of Me & We

A poem

By Tania SchiliroPublished 5 years ago Updated 4 years ago 1 min read

The human canvas enters the world blank,

Pure white at the core,

Untarnished by the many splatters of life,

Yet innately prepared to take on an immensity of colour.

Precious first moments characterized by carefree minutes of timelessness,

The barefoot days of summer,

Feeling, moving and balancing,

As one explores the soft green grass beneath one’s feet,

Fully engaged in a developing romance with the natural world.

Curiosity ensues as life unfolds,

And all senses,

Heightened,

Virgin eyes drawn towards the orange of autumn,

Fingers cherishing the fallen remnants of summer,

Ears provoked by the sounds of flashy cars,

Tastebuds awakened by the delicious crispness of carrots,

And the floral sweetness of a peach dessert,

A sublime smell.

The human experience peppered with elements of wonder and discovery.

Tears and smiles are born in the playground of life,

As hours are spent imagining, building and sharing under the golden afternoon sun.

The meaning of friendship is discovered,

And sometimes transformed into innocent expressions of early love.

And then, the first heartbreak.

Exploration becomes passion,

Romance becomes rage,

The journey of love takes on the many shades of red,

Fiery yet heartwarming in its immeasurable nature.

Matters of the heart then become matters of the whole,

Bittersweet blues,

As awakened minds learn to navigate a complicated world,

And the non-consensual creation of a colourless life.

Yet colours hold power,

Moods, behaviours, emotions,

Creative sources of information.

As the body approaches its final hours,

One begins to tend the garden of life with utmost care,

Grooming and blooming,

Remembering and forgetting,

And pretty little violets bring about a universal truth:

We are all made of the same rainbow.
