The Colours Of Her Sky

Breath. Blink. Breath. Cry.

A new-born baby blesses the world.

Breath. Blink. Breath. Cry.

Her pinkish skin began painting the sky.

‘It’s okay sweet girl, just hold that and count to three’.

Her beady eyes watched as her mother tended to her knee.

‘Mum?... Blood isn’t as scary as everyone says’

And that was the day red painted her sky.

She witnessed the wind be defeated

By the warrior rays of the sun.

This allowed for the orange lilies to bless her eyes.

This allowed for orange to paint her sky.

Ally was pretty. Ally was kind.

Ally was her best friend, one that’s hard to find.

Ally had soft blondish hair.

That was why yellow painted her sky.

She took Ally on a walk through a field

When her heart was broken thanks to that boy.

Ally said she wished she could camouflage in the grass like one of the butterflies,

For Ally, green painted her sky.

Valentine’s day twenty-twelve

And all she could do was stare at the alcohol on the shelves.

Why was her only valentine ears and a heavy heart?

Until she found the answer, she simply allowed the blue to paint her sky.

Ally always rescued her from the grey,

She would trust her arms to hold her fragility

‘Is that a new perfume?’, ‘Lavender’ she replied.

There was violet painting her sky.

‘You want to know one of my many confessions?’

She scrunched her nose at another of Ally’s random questions.

‘I’ve always thought that blue-y—purple-y top looked beautiful on you’

So, with her most honest smile, indigo painted her sky.

‘Do you want to know one of my secrets?’

Her heart pounded as Ally’s head nodded.

‘I have never felt I belonged. Not until I met you.

And I finally understand why.’

The words left her mouth, and the weight left her chest

Whilst the colour poured in and she spoke one last time

With vigour and with pride

‘I’m gay Ally.’

Breath. Blink. Breath. But don’t cry.

You are perfect, you and your rainbow-coloured sky.
