The Charity of the Lilacs

An Ekphrastic Sonnet

By D. J. ReddallPublished 9 months ago 1 min read
Vincent Van Gogh, "Lilac Bush," 1889

The world bulges with petty avarice

Reason seems not to understand itself

Villains and thieves are seen as glamorous

Books of wisdom sit idle on the shelf

But you, ravishing daughters of the spring

Never hesitate to be beautiful

Struck by your perfume, I am sent reeling

My plodding heart, desolate, is now full

Your silken sorority spurns sadness

You remind my nose that joy yet remains

Your symmetry mocks folly and madness

Despite loss, your glory the world retains

Your delicious aroma is a gift

Exhausted hearts, you have the strength to lift

Ekphrastic

Beautiful alliteration in “silken sorority spurns…”. Well done!

I love lilac too. That deep purple (rock on!) which pales and the nighttime scent which permeates the air....Deftly done, D.J.
