The Broken Toilet of Rebellion

Recently I started taking an online poetry class called Sharpened Visions: A Poetry Workshop. In week two we were challenged to write a poem title with the following construction: (Image) of (Abstraction). Some examples of this concept include "The Cheese of Time" or "The Bread of Bravery"

After coming up with the title, we were instructed to write a poem to match. As I was sitting at my desk, staring out the window, waiting for inspiration to hit--I noticed a group of young teens kicking a broken toilet that had been put out on the street for pickup. After kicking the porcelain, the kids began laughing and running off at full speed. This poem is about them.

The Broken Toilet of Rebellion

The sound of smashed porcelain

ringing through the streets

The pitter-patter of sneakers

Smacking on the concrete

Muffled giggles, racing hearts

We are impulse

and hormones

We are without a second thought

We are alive tonight

Maybe for the first time

Maybe for the last

Youth is forever,

As far as we know.
