The brilliant bird

Farah Piriyev

my rendition of a peacock perched in trees

Walking with a royal gait,

it’s feathers fluffed and back is straight,

Brilliant shades of royal blue

Strut right by me at the zoo.

I look at this creature, the brilliant bird,

Whose beauty in my eyes is deemed so absurd

And heavenly—

I say to the bird,

“Oh wondrous creature, come near and confide with me your secret,

share with my soul what powers you hold,

how are you so brilliant and bold? “

The elegant bird stops in her tracks,

and raises her feathers high above her back.

The eyes in her feathers shimmer wintergreen and gold,

Almost human

they peer straight in my soul,

and the peacock says

“You wished to learn of my power?

So behold!”
