The Boat Clock

"On my nightstand there is a boat clock..."

The Boat Clock by MaryAnn Vana

On my nightstand there is a boat clock

It represents a very old clock and it has seen some things over the years

Every time I look at the boat clock I can hear the waves of the sea or the bustle of the harbor

As the ship goes out to sea and leaves the harbor

The crew hears the cheers of people saying goodbye

Their loved ones cheer to mask the worry and sadness as they watch the ship sail away

I hear the captain shout out orders to the sailors, like a shepherd guiding his flock of sheep

The crew rally to the call to work the ropes

There are ropes around the boat clock as if they are the ropes around the ship, ready to use at any moment

There is a map inside of the clock written in ancient script

I can imagine the captain studying the map with lamplight late at night

The captain works to plot a course to the ends of the earth

When I look at the ship’s wheel at the bow of the boat of the clock, I can see the captain confidently sailing his ship through troubled waters

Inside on the boat deck there is a ship imprinted much like the Essex of 1820

I imagine that vessel because I am fascinated with the history of that ship

When the main type of transportation from country to country was by sailing

My boat clock display allows me to imagine a time gone by

surreal poetry
