The Beauty of Love and Separation
This ghazal explores the theme of love, its challenges, and the deep emotional journey of separation and longing. Hafez reflects on the complexities of the human heart, showing how love can be both uplifting and burdensome.

Hafez, the celebrated 14th-century Persian poet, is a towering figure in world literature. Known for his deep spiritual insights and mesmerizing wordplay, his poetry continues to inspire readers globally. Today, I’d like to share the English translation of one of his most famous works, Ghazal No. 1.
Oh, the cupbearer, bring the cup and pass it around
For love seemed easy at first, but now it’s full of difficulties.
In memory of joy and happiness, let us savor this moment of time
Not everyone who seeks happiness is truly at peace within.
The youth who once sought life’s pleasures, journeying far
Returns to the path, where pain and separation have been his companions.
From the heartbreaks and exiles of the heart, there is no true joy
Every day spent in love’s pursuit ends with longing and sorrow.
And oh, heart, which once was calm in its patience
In every parting and reunion, the secrets of the heart remain untold.
