The Beauty of an Untouched Star

A Story About My First Love, and the Space Between Us

By Jordan MoellenbeckPublished 8 years ago 2 min read

Space is vast. It is filled with a silence that almost seems deafening. However, space is not empty; it is far from it. When a star dies, its light dims, leaving behind a residue that once was, as each resident counts down the hours to their impending doomsday. I was this star. I was lost. I was far from any other world, floating aimlessly through the space that was once occupied. Never again. When stars collide, it is believed that a “big bang” can occur, that can create something beautiful and new. From death rises beauty- and from beauty rises death.

My gaze was caught by a beautiful star, I've never seen him in my rotations. He’s been closer to me than anyone else has been. This was new. I wanted to discover him, not caring if he discovered me. High hopes caught me mid-daydream, and I thought—I prayed— that he wanted to collide as much as I. I didn't care if I would die, but I knew that we could make something exquisite. I needed him, to give me a fresh start.

He pushed away, gravitating towards something greater, another star which did not shine as bright as I. Why could he’ve done this? Why did he come my way if he didn't want to collide? Will he ever return? I flared, calling him a bastard. But he still left- he left me unanswered. For many rotations, I have not seen him— maybe for the better. Occasionally, I see him from afar, kissing the surfaces of other suns, leaving my curiosity running wild. Has he returned to them? No- I have to let go, but for now, I'll float among the stars, for space is endless. I've learned my lesson. Maybe I was the selfish one. When stars are close, it creates a connection and constellation. There is no need to collide, but together it can create a beautiful image only for those who appreciate it. I wanted to find my Ursa Major. But he was never the one. He never looked into my planets. He didn't appreciate the beauty I could hold. Never again.
