The Beat of the Heart

From the beginning to the end - Poem.

It starts with the beat of the heart, the energy,

As the sound, the vibrational rhythm pounds

Followed by the gasp and gentle, consistency

As the sound and force of each breath of life

In due time, sound emits from their mouth

The cries, the laughs, the comforting sighs

Transform into mumbles, then words and speech

As the crawl begins, one hand in front of the other

shuffling along, exploring and learning

When their growing limbs get stronger, they stretch

Pull themselves up and start to survey all around them

From two feet, the pitter patter, the tip tap

From mother's milk to soft then solid foods

Before too long, they're off to explore the wider world

The cacophony of sights, sounds, scents, textures and tastes

Experiences, learning, love, laughter, sadness, and pain

Possibilities for the life that lays before them, what they do, what they don't

All backed by the same beat of the heart, the energy

That carries us all through our mortal existence

Until the very end, when the beat of the heart stops.

Thanks for reading!

Author's Notes: It's a poem that basically grew from the idea expressed in the first two lines. Make of it what you will! It's out there in the interether now! (Totally a word)

Hope you enjoyed it!

I really like this. The concept of those heartbeats and breaths that go unnoticed, but constantly fuel us through life. Brilliant!

Love the rhythm of this,Paul, and the sweet expression of how quickly it all goes made me emotional! I'm trying to hold on to the time that continually slips through my fingers. Great work with this one, and love the photo you picked!
