That's Gonna Leave A Mark

And Other Fun Stories

Making a trek near Flagstaff Arizona

eating barbeque chips atop my bologna

I saw a man in a trench coat, admiring the crater

I walked over and asked, if he needed a translator

He shook his head no, said my great grand father'd been here

It was long ago, though he wasn't sure of the year

He was looking for something that he lost at that site

but he could only see it, in the darkness of night

I said, what could it be? Something that glowed in the dark

he smiled and said, it's what left this mark

You see, he was soaring up near the sun

he needed a break from "area 51"

I looked at him blankly, you mean you're an alien?

he said, yes, I am, what do you do here for fun

I collected myself and said, we can go to Sedona

we can slide down the creek or go to Winslow Arizona

His eyes got all bright and he began to giggle

he said you mean the town, in the song, by the Eagles?

I said, oh my gosh, I really love those guys

it's too bad Glen Fry died, I would love a reprise

We turned on Spotify and jammed the afternoon away

Singing all of their songs, like hotel Cal -if-orn-ia

Then, as the sun set, we went down into the crater

there was a chill in the air, and a soft glowing vapor

And there it was, it all of its glory

the rouge spaceship he spoke of, in his great grandfather's story

He opened the door, and invited me in

I felt like a child, with my dumb, ornery grin

It started right up, and I let out a squeal

He said get over here, and let me take the wheel

Then, we soared away, over the great painted desert

stopped in at Sonic and had some sweet cosmic yogurt

As the sun began to rise, he said, wow, this has been fun

my grandfather always told me, on earth, don't trust anyone

I can see he was wrong; you have been a delight

he dropped me by my car, and then flew out of sight

The next day my phone dinged, it was a text message

I'll be back at the crater, wanna go grab some sausage?

Well, that was the tale of my extraterrestrial friend

At least once a month, we get together again

These short short stories of yours are great. Stories as poems. Maybe I will give it a try.

  • Sounds like a whole lot of fun. Enjoyed this thoroughly, Kelli.
