That Look

A Sonnet

Nostalgia for the sweet, spousal swivel

Moments when surprise synchronizes eyes

Will yield, as the early blossoms shrivel

To looks that past selves would not recognize

At first, the present glistens with fresh love

Each gesture and caress throbs with delight

The most subtle adjustment of a glove

Contains a silent promise, kept by night

But soon, imagination will construct

Futures in which small problems are enlarged

Annoying habits linger and instruct

The eyes in glaring at the villain, charged

How swiftly we condemn those we adored

Who, having thrilled us before, leave us bored

Sonnet

I write because my time is limited and my imagination is not.
