A Whisper In My Ear

I wrote down all my troubles

and everything became clear.

I bore out my heart

and finally faced my fear.

I fought hard against death

and gave him no tears;

I gave nothing as I prayed

that God would stay near.

My last whits were frayed

as the devil gave cheer,

but I wouldn’t give in,

no, not this year.

Alas, the devil was slayed,

and, only for love, I shed a tear.

He was just a nightmare,

Nay, just a whisper in my ear.
