Temper Your Need

She doesn’t need fixing

She understands who she is, understands herself deeply,

The soft centre, the fragile heart, the consistent pain,

She feels strongly and loves deeply,

Always losing more than she will ever gain.

******

She’ll stand by your side if she feels safe with you,

Expose her vulnerability to any she can trust,

Walk the wild side for those she loves,

And discard her misfortune, leaving those in her dust.

******

She’ll whisper her dreams in your ear,

Gift you her care but only when you deconstruct your pride,

She’ll explore her sexuality with a wanton caress,

And tether herself to your heartstrings and stand by your side.

******

But be warned, do not attempt to tame her darkness,

She guards that shit with the strength of a truck,

She’ll not negotiate this point, fuelled by her stubbornness,

Tread wearily here, as she’ll not give a fuck.

******

This side of her has no need of mending,

So leave it be, there’s no need to scorn,

Don’t try to fix her or shower her with blind comfort,

Her darkness a twinset of when her strength was born.

******

She’ll wearily swim the depths of the darkest lakes,

And wander the hours of the darkest nights,

Fly through the moonless skies on the blackest of wings,

And shed the blood of her destined fights.

******

She covets the depths of her darkening soul,

A work in progress, so leave well alone,

Accept her sweet smiles, her loving arms,

But remember, her darkness, is a no go zone.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
