Inspired by and dedicated to my mom, Terisa Goldblatt.
Superhero Mom
Mom, you gave me life.
You made a choice
for me to thrive.
A million cries, you heard my voice.
What you did for me
none will ever really know--
the perfect blessing of each sneeze
the way you held me close.
Mom, the words no one says enough to you
I try to say them now:
you are a superhero you,
the who, the where, the how.
When I needed one more thing
you brought it when you would,
and when it wasn't meant to be
you quietly wished you could.
Mothers are the Saints unspoken
Mom, you value pales when in compare to this token.
Shopping Trip
You did it all
All the little things
we need
Each one in grace
planting seeds
with the love across your face.
The vegetables that grew me
like the reassurance that you really knew me
when the kids at school thought I was not cool...
you did.
It seems silly to care so much
that you cared so much
about my hair and the special things
I wanted to wear so much.
But now I have my own
I see all the love you have sewn
in me.
Every little detail
Accounted for and cared for
to make a person out of me
now strengthens my resolve
in being patient
being kind
being loving.
All the love you gave me
in between the shopping trips
and sometimes during
when you handed me the jugs of milk
the radishes
the ice cream
the glitter in your eyes
and the smile that would arise
while you carried me
or walked with me in your arms
or in the cart
or beside me
as I went from small to taller
to taller than you
well, that smile fed me
as good or better
than any broccoli.
You showed me
how to love myself
Did you know
you were mothering
the mother in me?
A Mother's Gaze
Oceans flow from eyes:
Powerful waves that stop me in my tracks;
gentle tides caress.]
