Sunshine Beneath Skin

We're Undeniably the Same

By Crystal SloanPublished 5 years ago 2 min read

I was born from red and brown

and it’s hard to stay true in a prism.

When I’m fractioned;

I’m bound to become reactional.

I am more than what is seen,

I am light beyond meaning.

Where beautiful and ugly

take up no space.

Where lines and borders

can no longer be traced.

Some say I am spread thin

that I don’t see color,

and am unaware of the world I live in.

That I am too bold

and others, too pastel.

They force us into spectrums

where we’re expected to dwell,

but as a song changes keys;

I know that I am more

than just one pigment.

One shade is not the gist of it,

my soul is a mood chart

and it changes by my temperament.

By my rage, my apathy or my affection.

Typical assessments won’t define

what I am

or who I am.

I leak into the room

like the morning dawn.

And like the truth

you can’t hold me back for very long.

I am useful and vibrant,

like something mysteriously nutritious.

Separated; if only for an instant.

With the strength of fire

and the cunningness of water,

born from earth

and delivered by wind.

A rainbow always seems to

end up where it begins.

Somewhere illusive

and vastly close.

A painter lost in passionate brush strokes,

attempting to create

a world unknown.

An invention of perception,

a magician of persuasion

narrated by a colored arrangement;

a cosmic play of death.

Shades upon shades

until there's nothing left.

The sunset beyond the end of the world.

Where light takes a deep breath

and exhales a new day.

This is the only space inside

I wish to meet you now.

This fertile blackness.

A crisp white that tickles in a place I can’t name.

Flowers and roots.

Blooming and dying.

Endless leaves of green.

Thorns and blood and groves of things that attract pollinators.

There’s clear skies and stormy weather.

Symbiotically and simultaneously contained within my core.

Like the bottom of the sea

and the arms of the milky way

are equally running through my veins.

I just wish you could understand

what I mean when I say;

you and the sunshine

are undeniably the same.
