I find myself in endless stories spun

From trembling lips sewed shut with cobwebbed minds

A faceless mouth paints tales of woe and shun

Affirming pain uncovers what’s behind

*

The wraiths of former summers linger here

Their hauntings just as thick as humid air

As lightning struck their trails left scarring fears

Relieved that my clear skies leave room to share

*

I listen to their sweat-soaked nightmare truths

I hear their urgent screams and silent cries

Reflect the painful feelings from their youth

I offer space and safety plans to try

*

As my friends enjoy days that are golden

Mine are spent creating semicolons

*

Thank you for reading my second entry to the Shakespeare Sonnet Challenge. My career has led me to my current position as a crisis counselor. Although I sometimes envy those who are enjoying their weekends and beautiful weather, I am more than grateful for this opportunity to speak to those contemplating suicide.

If you ever find yourself in a similar situation, please do not hesitate to call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-8255.

Your life matters and that’s not a cliché - I truly believe this.
