Summers by the Pool

Fractures of my youth

Sunshine summer spent

cool pool, barefoot, tan with joy

I'd jump in again.

Along the rough edge,

hold the wall to travel safe

to waters too deep.

Below the dive board,

ice cold jet stream flowed for us,

my brother swims first.

A horsefly crawled in

my mom's hundred curls poolside

step off; deep-end plunge.

    nice

  • Ah, the joys of summer. But your jet streams were ice cold? Ours were always warm. Then again, I grew up in Watertown, SD where warming up the pool was pretty important a good portion of the time. Where did these memories of yours take place?

I re-read these lines many times: "A horsefly crawled in my mom's hundred curls poolside step off; deep-end plunge." Such vivid imagery to digest!
