Summer Waves
a rare family reunion in iambic pentameter

A pool! A pool! the cousins all proclaimed
with eager, longing joy that broke the ice
of years apart, so shy, and words constrained,
but lapping waves of water will suffice
to drain the awkwardness of time away
to sink in depths of laughing, carefree bliss
as voices shout and dive in splashing play,
exhilarate a glee most aqueous.
The water stained by popsicles and plums,
inflated floaties sinking, losing air,
wet toes and fingers wrinkled in the sun,
the drifting leaves, the scent of chlorine hair,
the waves of summer linger in my mind,
the childhood joys and loves we leave behind.
