Strings

Of pianos, and tennis, and cats

By Paul A. MerkleyPublished about a year ago 3 min read

At the very bottom of now, or

At the very end for now, when

The smallest atom is split, and

Its tiniest sub particles are dissected, not

With microscope, or photon blade, but

With the human mind (not mine of course—I’m a musician not a mathemagician)

Each eclectic, erudite, equitable equation is balanced, and

The plurinumerous micro-weights are all totted up, then

What the math says we will find—if I have grasped this, which

Is a doubtful or doubtable proposition, because

I stopped my mathematical education when

The complexities of complex analysis put a stop to that, still

I think I may have grasped what has been patiently set out, and

It seems we are being told that beneath it all, I mean it all, you see, there are

A whole lot of vibrating strings. Yes, and

Each one is vibrating at its own frequency, so

I think it would be cacophony, but

I don’t think that one cello or bass barking on a single note counts for much until

It joins up with another, then

We have music, music as a high art, and

One can resonate with another in harmony or otherwise, plus

The strings can change frequency, and then

We would have good music, I mean

Really great music, so

I think that Soul, having this knowledge deep within

The recesses of ITS understanding, or maybe

Up inside the lofty heights of

ITS innermost knowingness must

Therefore delight in pianos and cellos and harps and

Also in tennis, do you not think? And

If God’s gift to Soul is consciousness, and if

Consciousness ensouls all

(I didn’t believe that was a real word until

It came up in a Word Game), then

Each string vibrates according to its state of consciousness, and

We can affirm that consciousness is the only cause, and further

They tell me that the strings are one-dimensional, but

Each one has six, maybe seven dimensions curled around itself, hidden,

So the model is eight-dimensional, and

I guess the highest dimension would be the eighth plane of reality, or

Seventh heaven, and that’s in the Bible and the Talmud

And Buddhist writings, and more, and

These dimensions are curled around each string, you see, just like

A Siamese cat’s tail, wrapped neatly around the cat, just

A perfect arrangement to keep the tail safe from an errant foot,

Or a thoughtless rocking chair, because

Cats have lots of good secrets like that, and

TSE knew it, didn’t he?

Dante knew the dimensions, and he said things best for me, so

In the seventh heaven of Paradiso, which is the heaven of Venus,

“E come in fiamma favilla si vede”

(“Both as in a flame a spark is seen”)

“E come in voce, voce si discerna”

(“And as in a voice, a note can be discerned”), then

“Quand un’ è fermo, e l’altro va e riede”

(“When one is still, and the other goes and returns”), which

Pretty much covers it, don’t you agree? And

It takes in that Theory of Relativity too, which

Is just a great big bonus for all who

Bent their heads around the idea of space-time, when

Space and time have no existence beyond the fourth dimension, which

I can’t prove with an equation, but have known in my travels, and

You don’t have to believe me because you go there for yourself, which

I highly recommend as a field trip, and

I do earnestly believe that we are all tuning up, though

Some not very fast, but still

Still your mind and give it a chance, or

Join the dance, or

Listen to the exquisite music

Of all those strings,

And follow the harmonies as they change, and

Changing, as they re-arrange
