Stolen Summer

Sometimes the heart cannot be denied.

How cliche, falling for the boy next door,

My friend's older brother.

She would prefer that I love another.

But love is an unpredictable thing.

One look at you, and my toes curled.

One smile from you, and my heart soared.

Butterflies! No.

I had hummingbirds fluttering around every time you were near.

You were off-limits and all the more enticing for it.

Our first stolen kisses were all that I could've imagined.

In my naivete, I fell so hard.

Not knowing that it couldn't last,

That you'd soon be leaving.

Adulthood was calling,

Meanwhile, I was endlessly falling.

I cherished every stolen moment,

Every memory of your hand in mine.

The whispers of love,

Promises that we'd never forget.

That summer will always be preserved in time,

It still plays so vividly in my mind.

The year when I was yours,

and you were mine.
