Starfish
Another summer, another boy who wasn't mine to keep...

ev'ry night you kiss a girl by shadow,
while I wait on your each gesture and word,
till I feel like just a clever sideshow—
who am I kidding, all the lines are blurred.
*
even your gifts, in vain, fall too shallow—
why should it matter, I was your game's fool—
though you once left me soft like marshmallow
and I was yarn unwinding from a spool.
*
the beach leaves its treasures each sunrise morn,
and you think you're a wit with a starfish—
it would be so easy to hate, heart torn—
but you're still a charmer, your grin wolfish.
*
we wouldn't last beyond August's red sun,
but there's no lie to say you were true fun.
