after Gwendolyn Brooks’

“To the Young Who Want to Die”

Laid a head down in the din of

grasses gnashing with buzz bugs

creepers and chirpies

Bushes of birds match the Weltschmerz,

polyphonic pullulating

heavy with teeming

wet green wringing spring right outta

the earth so forth froths a warmer coming

a sweetheart’s hot coze

Deathbed verdure in a drawn out

climate briefing on the subtropic

afternoon snooze
