Spirit Messengers of Earth and Sky
Feathers, Paws, & Ancestral Echoes
This is the time to call the spirit messengers to breathe peace into our universe of division and chaos in 2025.
In Choctaw culture, birds, especially the Biskinik (often identified with the blue jay), are sacred messengers, symbols of communication, and bearers of spiritual news. They connect the earthly and spiritual realms, guiding and warning with their presence.
Spirit animals are more than symbols, they are guides, protectors, and teachers deeply rooted in Native American traditions. Across various tribes, these beings embody traits and lessons that connect the physical and spiritual worlds.
Spirit Animals: Ancestral Guides in Native American Culture
In Native American traditions, spirit animals are sacred companions. They appear in dreams, rituals, and daily life, offering wisdom, protection, and connection to the natural world. Each animal carries a unique teaching:
• Bear: Strength, healing, introspection, a teacher of resilience and renewal
• Wolf: Loyalty, community, instinct, a guide for family bonds and perseverance
• Eagle: Vision, courage, divine connection, a messenger between realms
• Owl: Wisdom, mystery, clarity, a seer through darkness and hidden truths
We do not choose spirit animals, they choose you. Their presence is a call to listen, to honor, and to walk with integrity. In Choctaw ethics and other tribal teachings, they remind us of our place in the web of life.
“Raised with Choctaw values, I walk with the bear’s strength and the owl’s clarity. My archive listens.” Sweetie Bird is a ceremonial bird messenger, her tweets now echoing the eagle’s divine flight.
Jaguar in Indigenous and Mayan Cultures
• Symbol of Power and Transformation: In Mesoamerican cultures, especially the Maya and Aztec, the jaguar was revered as a divine being, a cosmic force that could traverse realms.
• Bridge Between Worlds: The jaguar’s nocturnal nature linked it to the underworld and ancestors. It was seen as a guide between the living and the spirit realm.
• Royal Authority: Maya rulers often adopted jaguar names and imagery to assert divine legitimacy, “Jaguar Paw,” “Shield Jaguar,” and thrones carved with jaguar motifs.
• Cosmic Coat: Its spotted fur was likened to the night sky, reinforcing its celestial role.

Feathers, Paws, & Ancestral Echoes
Spirit Messengers of Earth and Sky
Introduction
With breath and bone, we gather in sacred circle,
Calling forth the wisdom of feathers and paws,
Honoring the echoes of our ancestors,
Those who walked before us,
Those who guide us still.
Tonight, we sing to the spirit messengers of earth and sky.
Owl, jaguar, blue jay, bear, and all winged kin
Inviting their presence, their stories, their strength.
May their voices join ours,
May their memories awaken in our hearts,
As we offer this song ritual in gratitude and remembrance,
Bridging time and space,
Uniting earth and spirit, In the dance of life eternal.
Begin with breath, begin with bone,
The owl calls from twilight’s throne.
Jaguar waits where shadows bend,
Blue jay sings what will not pretend.
Each step a glyph, each word a flame,
We name the wild, and it names our name.
I remember the little girl.
Who danced in a whirl,
Into the spirit world
Of a little brown bear
That was a scary surprise.
But the brown baby bear
Held out its paw
I touched it on the paw.
As it peeked out from under the bed
I jumped back instead
But then reached out touched.
A soft paw of playful fun
Had just begun.

Owls guarded the house.
In every room
I assumed
Mamma bear believed owls were protection.
Baby bear was happy in a reflection.
Of time and space
The jaguar in the later years of baby bear
Helped her through rough days.
To associate with clarity and strength
The blue jay...
Woodpecker drums on ancient pine,
Rhythms echo, spirit’s sign.
Scarlet crown and speckled wing,
Messenger of awakening.
Heartbeat of the forest deep,
Calling wisdom from our sleep.
Persistent seeker, bold and true,
Opens doors to worlds anew.
Guardian of sacred sound,
In every tap, the ancestors are found.
A woodpecker tapped on the windowpane,
South Beach sun, gentle rain.
Scarlet crown in morning light,
Messenger calling, spirit’s sight.
Rhythms echo through glass and bone,
Awakening wisdom, not alone.
Persistent seeker, bold and bright,
Brings ancestral voices into sight.
Guardian of boundaries, drumming true,
Inviting the ancestors to circle with you.

Begin with breath, begin with bone,
The owl calls from twilight’s throne.
Silent wings, moonlit eyes,
Guardian of the midnight skies.
Dusky feathers, wisdom spun,
Echoes softly when day is done.
Jaguar waits where shadows bend,
Amber gaze that will not end.
Spotted cloak, muscles sleek,
Whispered power, ancient mystique.
Night’s prowler, jungle’s king,
Strength and clarity he brings.

Blue jay sings what will not pretend,
Sapphire flash, a playful friend.
Clever chatter, skyward flight,
Bold and brash in morning light.
Azure feathers, laughter’s tune,
Messenger of hope and June.
Bear of brown, with gentle paw,
Childhood’s wonder, spirit’s awe.
Shaggy coat, honeyed dreams,
Soft protector, moonbeam gleams.
From under beds to forest deep,
Guardian of the child’s sleep.
Begin with breath, begin with bone,
The owl calls from twilight’s throne.
Silent wings, moonlit eyes,
Guardian of the midnight skies.
Dusky feathers, wisdom spun,
Echoes softly, day is done.

Jaguar waits where shadows bend,
Amber gaze that will not end.
Spotted cloak, muscles sleek,
Whispered power, ancient mystique.
Night’s prowler, jungle’s king,
Strength and clarity he brings.
Blue jay sings what will not pretend,
Sapphire flash, a playful friend.
Clever chatter, skyward flight,
Bold and brash in morning light.
Azure feathers, laughter’s tune,
Messenger of hope and June.
Bear of brown, with gentle paw,
Childhood’s wonder, spirit’s awe.

From under beds to forest deep,
Guardian of the child’s sleep.

Seagulls wheel in salt-kissed air,
Symbols of freedom everywhere.
Resourceful, bold, and fiercely true,

Spirit’s whisper, crystal clear.
In ancestral lore, robin’s tune
Calls forth courage, springtime’s boon.
