I’ve been colorblind
for a ridiculously long time.
I opened my
honey brown eyes,
and came to realize
that I am bi.
A complete stranger spoke
and yanked the rose gold
lenses off my nose,
crushing them to crystals:
prisms and petals.
The light
I was born to shine
illuminates
and permeates
through the shards:
my inner spark.
Mantis shrimp in the sea
have at least
twelve photoreceptors-
color sensors-
while we
only have three.
Hummingbirds can see
a grandiloquent display
of ultraviolet rays,
and I can’t even process
nor digest
these perceptions
of their spectrum.
I cannot fathom
these collections of atoms
on different frequencies.
Grayscale may very well be
vivid reds, blues, or greens;
and I wear prescription glasses,
so I’m blind as it is.
I came to realize
that I am bi.
After all this time,
I thought I was gray,
but I’m finally ready
to embrace
the rainbow inside me.
