Spaced Out • Intro
A preview of my upcoming cosmology philosophy inspired poetry collection
"You know, they say you can go crazy if you look at the moon for too long?" - I guess he followed the direction of my gaze. I answered without so much as blinking. "That's true. It happened to me."
"Oh?" he laughed
Why is he laughing? Oh man. If he doesn't already know I'm crazy there definitely won't be a second date.
"Yeah" I said. "Years ago, in this very spot. I pointed to the moon and asked three of my friends what it was"
"What did they say?"
"The moon"
"Is that the wrong answer?"
"Sort of. Obviously I know that's the moon, but what is it? What actually is a moon?"
"Um, I think it's like a rock?" He didn't sound confident.
"Okay, so it's a giant space rock that illuminates my giant space rock?"
"Yeah!" Now he sounded really confident.
"See, that's how they reacted. So proud, like I'd finally figured it out. There's a giant space rock that controls the ocean and serves as a night light for the spinny space rock I live on, and everyone just accepts that as a totally normal, mundane thing. That's when I realised I was totally insane, because none of it makes any fucking sense to me."
I met his eyes with mine as he turned to face me.
Wow, okay he's smiling. Maybe someone actually gets what I'm saying?
"Maybe you're just spaced out"
Nevermind.
He laughed and teasingly poked my ribs. I pretended it tickled and gave a half hearted laugh.
"Maybe I'm a fucking alien."
