SOULS REMEMBERED

Unknown but not forgotten

+ + + +

Defending their national honor,

Defending their country’s voice,

They gave the Ultimate Sacrifice

By making the Ultimate Choice.

+ +

They chose to fight with their comrades;

Their emotions bursting with pride.

Some live to relate the horrors of war –

But, too many heroes have died.

+ +

They carried their Flag onto Victory

For the home of the free and the brave.

We remember our fallen heroes

By placing a flag at each grave.

+ +

All of them buried with honors –

Their names, now, chiseled in stone.

But, too many are honored by one silent tomb:

The Soldier whose name is unknown.

+ + + +

God Bless America and those who fought to keep her free.

Though I agree with Smedley Butler (no relation) that War is a Racket, I also agree whole heartedly that anyone who faces battle with an ideal in their heart is a protector of freedom, and deserves to be honored. “Have you heard that it was good to gain the day? I say also it is good to fall... battles are lost in the same spirit in which they are won.” -Walt Whitman, Leaves of Grass Whitman ministered to fallen soldiers in the hospital in D.C. during the CIvil War, bringing them treats and helping them write letters home. If you ever want to have a good cry, some of those letters he wrote on their behalf are still out there. He was a beautiful soul and so are you! Well-wrought!
