Dear God who breathes the stars,
And brings dry bones to life again,
Creator of the Universe,
Yahweh — Beginning, End.
Lord Rapha, Eloi, El Shaddai,
Author of Life, Soul Lover,
I pray you look upon your girl,
And not forget to hug ’er.
God, I ask not ’cause you fail,
Rather ’cause I’m so fickle.
I pray, not doubting that you’re good,
But because I’m so sick of—
Not being faithful.
Not being true.
Not being loving.
Not being good.
Not being happy.
Not being nice.
Not letting your love…
Suffice.
I’m a woolly sheep — a dumb one.
I’m a wiggly worm — a blind one.
I am not enough, you hear me?
God why would you put up with me?
Is it ’cause you’re everything I’m not?
Hung on the cross so I don’t rot.
You lead this stupid little sheep,
You are so faithful though I’m weak.
But Jesus, you are also gentle.
Treat me better than a rental.
You see fertile ground where I see dirt,
See potential where I see hurt.
Roll up your sleeves like,
Watch me work.
Carpentry, yea — but I cook too,
Breaking bread, making all things new.
Master Chef, in heaven’s kitchen,
Love me even when I’m trippin’.
Tables ain’t the only thing you’re flippin’.
Lord, I love you… but you loved me first.
I give you my life, even at my worst.
Who else but the one who brings back dry bones,
Could I trust to lead this prodigal back home?
Don’t want to run. Don’t want to roam.
Tired of livin on my own.
Tired of trying things for myself,
Putting my dreams up on the shelf.
Lord God, I give my wants the pink slip,
Only want to keep what you see fit.
Only want to try on what you style,
But unlike Adam, it makes me smile
When you burn up fig leaves that don’t cover,
Dress me up in white like your heart’s lover.
You call me Bride, Lord, You’re my Groom.
Got my bouquet,
You’re coming soon.
I’ll pack until
You make it back.
No more whining ’bout
The things I lack.
You’re everything
I want and more.
And only you know
What you
Have in store.
Happily Ever After
Ain’t just a bedtime story.
