Sonnet No. 129 – they lied – Covid poem 11

The death ticker edges ever higher.

Three hundred thousand people is the count.

Good people die, what can be so dire?

Can anyone be held up to account?

Our country’s leaders claimed it was no worry,

That they, and they alone, had it controlled.

They lied to us, “this is but mere flurries.”

A few sick folks, no need for action bold.

It’s not the flu, but that is what trump told us.

It’s a killer bug that might last life-long.

All those months, that is what they sold us,

“Poof, like a miracle, it will be gone.”

They lied, but that’s not a bit of console,

for those loved ones now buried on the knoll.
