Something began when the meteors fell from the sky.
Some say it was magic, some say it was a blessing,
some say it was a curse, some say it was the end of times.
But I knew in my heart of hearts
that nothing would ever be the same again.
I felt it down to my very bones,
like the resonance of a gong, or a singing bowl,
like a premonition.
Something was coming, or came,
that would change the fabric of reality.
And as time went by,
we prayed we could go back to how it was before.
We could hold fast to a past that was already lost,
with greedy, grasping hands,
we held it close to our chests,
like flimsy armor,
like it could save us somehow
if only we believed hard enough.
But it was too late.
The change snuck up on us, hidden in plain sight,
insidious to some, but salvation for others.
Now we sit around the fire, huddled for comfort and warmth,
and talk about the night the meteors fell from the sky,
as if we could contain it.
Put it back into the box.
Shut our eyes to reality for just a little while longer.
Dreaming a dream that no longer existed.
Hoping against all hope that the change
wouldn’t become a nightmare,
but our saving grace.
