Someone Better
Coming to Terms With Misguided Lessons in Humility

I’ve spent my entire life searching for you,
The legend of your greatness repeated every day.
Everything I hated,
Everything I feared, and
Everything I wanted,
All in one wondrous being.
Always there,
Always close,
Yet we never seemed to meet.
Smarter,
Prettier,
Faster,
You were everything I was,
But better in every way.
You gave me humility,
But stole my confidence,
Paralyzing me with fear,
Freezing me in doubt,
Lurking in the shadows, besting my every move.
When we finally met today,
I was shocked, surprised to learn
That you’re a fiction,
Passed down through generations,
Kept alive in my shame.
So the day we meet is the day we part,
And I leave you knowing
There is no comparison,
No better,
No worse,
No contest,
No race,
There’s just me,
And she’s just fine.
