Some Say Freedom is Free

But I Tend to Disagree

By Antonio Obi-wan Abinadi FloresPublished 4 years ago • 3 min read

Freedom for a lot of people is different, they tend to have one definition over the other.

It's various meanings throughout the centuries to billions.

For me, I admit that I hadn't really considered much what it meant to me. But recent events have made me ponder on what freedom actually means.

And I guess that for me, it means choice. Or rather, the capability to choose and live with those choices.

We all too often take the idea of free will gratuitously, not understanding the sacrifices that have been made so that we could choose to be who we want to be, believe in what we want to believe, act how we want to act, and more and as such, we can face the consequences of our decisions, both good and bad.

And, as long as there has been freedom of choice, there have been those that have desired to restrict that freedom, to suppress and destroy. We find stories all throughout history, whether in our own home or around the world, and all of them failed.

The people in Ukraine have the right to live their lives peacefully, making their own choices not only as people, but as a country. They're fighting fiercely, every day, to bring people back home, and restore the freedom they had to live their lives without the fear of dying every day of losing more friends and family.

Even the Russians, the young men who hadn't seen a day of combat in their lives, their families, their mothers, deserve their freedom to make choices that don't involve senseless violence and death.

Already we've seen the stories, children who had no idea what they were getting into, dying on both sides. Civilians, infrastructure, and all for what?

It is said that in war, there are no victors. This is true, for freedom has been lost on both sides with lives, livelihoods, and more.

As I see the suffering that's being caused, the people that are struggling for their freedom. It reminds me of a cadence we used to sing at bootcamp.

I took the liberty of adding some lyrics that also help reflect the situation.

Because freedom is never free.

Some say freedom is free but I tend to disagree

I say freedom is won, through barrel of a gun.

Daddy fought in Vietnam, he was killed by Viet Cong.

Grandpa fought in World War II, he was killed for me and you.

Tell me why, tell me why, does a Sailor have to die.

Some say freedom is free, but I tend to disagree.

I say freedom is won, through the blood of someone's son.

Two Planes Crashed into the World Trade

Thousands lost their lives that day.

Tell me why, tell me why, did those people have to die?

Some say freedom is free, but I tend to disagree.

I say freedom is won, through barrel of a gun.

Ukraine's fighting in '22. Children dying way too soon.

Russian boys and mothers weep, as the fruits of lies are reaped.

Tell me why, tell me why, do these people have to fight?

Tell me why, tell me why, do these people have to die?

"Momma, I'm in Ukraine, we were just supposed to train."

"Suddenly we invade, now I am afraid."

Tell me why, tell me why, do these people have to die?

Daddy had to stay behind. Kissed his little girl goodbye.

Now he's fighting on his side, just trying to stay alive.

Tell me why, tell me why, do these people have to fight?

Tell me why, tell me why, do these people have to die?

Young and old are found, fighting for their hometowns.

Tears are falling to the ground, as they fire one more round.

Tell me why, tell me why, do these people have to fight?

Tell me why, tell me why, do these people have to die?

The world has been called to arms, to turn back those who do harm.

One man started this war, now we rise once more.

Tell me why, tell me why, do these people have to fight?

Tell me why, tell me why, must we always have to fight?

Tell me why, tell me why, do these people have to die?

Some say freedom is free, but I tend to disagree.

I say freedom is won, when all of this is done.
