So far away (Original Version)

Before all the cuts and edits...

By ᔕᗩᗰ ᕼᗩᖇTYPublished about a year ago 1 min read

This was the original poem I wrote but since the challenge was limited to 75-125 words I had to cut it to bits. I feel like I lost so much of the poem that I decided to re-post the original. It's very hard to be in love with someone whose 6000 miles away, but God help me, I adore her.

The title of the poem was inspired by the below song, Carole King, "So far away"

________________________________________________

I wish that you were only

a hundred miles away

I would have no problem

driving that every day.

I hear my friends talk about

their dates, mates, spouses

and what have you.

But the woman I love

is six thousand

miles away from me

which makes me very blue.

I dream about the next time

that I can make that trip

for I've never wanted so badly

to kiss someone's lips.

The distance is a gut punch

with you oh so far away

I wish I could come there to Istanbul

and just stay.

Your beauty is like nothing that I have

ever known before.

If you would let me I'd be knocking

right now on your door.

We'd walk in the park holding hands

because no one would suspect we were lovers

because of the culture.

You would cook for me your famous chicken kebap

and I would eat until I practically popped.

We would ride the ferry

and feed the seagulls

and no one would need to know

we were in love, us two girls.

I know it may be wrong but I could live

in that closet again for you because

six thousand miles away is just so hard to do.

When I first met my now wife, more than 22 years ago...I was in Glasgow, she was in Essex. Not the same distance, but I get the distance thing so much. This was heartbreaking and also such a loving ode. Those last few lines, were quite the gut punch really, Sam. This moved me and I hope the woman in question reads it and sees that your love is clearly shining through across many miles. Well done for sharing such an honest, and personal piece! And you make a pretty couple.

This brings to mind my own experience of so long ago. As a new college graduate just commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in the Army I got married in Nov 1985 … two weeks before leaving for a year in South Korea. My fiancé/ new wife’s father wanted us to wait for that year before marrying, but she needed that security of the ring… as did I. That separation was tough, but we persevered and got through it. Now, 39 years later, we have 4 adult children and 8 grandchildren and are 7 days from that 39th anniversary. Be strong and don’t let the naysayers get in your head. Your poem is lovely, and, of course, also highlights a hurdle that my wife and I did not have to jump… But love is found where it is. Grasp it, hold it, mold it, nurture it. Best wishes.

Relationships are challenging in any instance but thrive with effort over any distance. Lovely, Sam.
