LET ME SLEEP
If I should sleep before I die
I’d like the world to know that I
Would like to be left well alone
In deepest slumber on my own.
Please don’t stamp about the place!
Don’t let the puppy lick my face!
Don’t let the children scream and shout!
Don’t move the furniture about!
Please don’t bring me tea and toast
‘cos sleeping’s what I crave the most!
Please don’t use the vacuum dear
To clean the carpet near my ear!
Don’t try to pull my duvet straight
If feet are cold well that’s their fate!
Don’t try to tuck my blankets round
If I’m asleep its ‘cos I’ve found
A way somehow finally getting
My body straight without much sweating!
Too hot? Too cold? I just don’t care
If I’m asleep just leave me there!
And then, if midday passes by
Just leave me sleeping, let me lie!
They call me grumpy they don’t know
I last slept properly weeks ago!
If I seem angry mean and crabbit
I blame it on my sleeping habits.
I go to bed I toss and turn
And then my brain begins to churn
I then remember jobs undone
Those finished yesterday – not one!
I make a list I do the sums
Of things to do when morning comes
It seems to happen every night
I just can’t keep my eyes closed tight
So then I rise and leave my bed
To come downstairs write poems instead
But as my pen falls from my grasp
I’ve just one thing I’d like to ask
Please ignore the sound of zedds
That other people make in beds
If I am drowsing, dreaming sheep
Please leave alone and let me sleep
zzzzzzz
