A Family Tradition

Summertime meant a true lakeside retreat

I played and I laughed and I ran around

I basked in sunshine and cherished the heat

And started my search through stones on the ground

I sought the flat ones, the best ones to skip

Discarded a big one, then one too small

Compared each shape while biting my lip

I liked so many, could not use them all

Rules stated no helping, each on their own

One two three ready, we raced to the shore

And one at a time, we each tossed a stone

Counted the bounces and hoped for one more

Those summer days I recall with such joy

Simple and easy, a stone for a toy
