The Little Black Dress has power
Black is slimming, forgiving
But wrong for us.
Dearest Friend
Black diminishes and
Hides our light.
The ones you miss
Would strew your path
With marigolds, yellow as the sun.
And feed you berries
Grown on a hill charged purple
By their fruit.
Black is for a lake
On a moonless night or
Frames holding moments.
We can forgive our own sadness
So heart-sister, please
Step from the shadows.
We’ll dress in tangerine, scarlet
And twirl on grass
pink with clover.
Until your eyes, bluer than the sea
Or grandmother’s forget-me-nots
Remember how to shine.
