Sit Tight

An ode to the chronically ill.

By Maggie Published about a year ago 1 min read

Theres something in how she says those words

It’s meant to be comforting

But I’ve been here too many times before

It feels like I don’t know

Or it’ll sort itself out

But they don’t know my body is my enemy

I’m fighting a battle where both sides lose

Causing me pain

Getting more extreme in its rebellion

There is no known agenda

Not one my doctor cares to find

Sit tight

Come back if it doesn’t stop

Come back if it gets worse

Nothing alarming yet

And yet all my alarm bells get louder

The check engine light gets brighter

The screaming for help turns strangled

But sit tight she says

Just sit tight

As if nothing was wrong

As if I am not tired of living inside a broken body

As if sitting tight doesn’t feel like torture

But sit tight she says

Sit tight until I see you again

Sit tight until I send you to someone else

Sit tight while I wait for someone or something to help me

Sit tight

Just sit tight
