Sire of Shadows

An Ekphrastic Sonnet

By D. J. ReddallPublished 2 years ago 1 min read
Edward Hopper, "Morning Sun," 1952

The light does not need to be understood

It does not require your forgiveness

It washes everything, evil and good

It is indifferent to your business

Contemplate the waking metropolis

Blinking fat beneath the fluorescent glare

Does the light love or hate any of this?

No more than does your silent, summer stare

Alike, the orphan and the oligarch

Yawn as the light sires schools of shadows

The twitching addict and the bored monarch

Weigh the debt that the light the darkness owes

The light sanctifies galaxies and bees

The homologous curves of breasts and knees

Ekphrastic

You are on a sonnet roll! Getting ready for a chap book?

  • Blinking fat beneath the florescent glare. That was my favourite line. Loved your poem!
