Pick it Up
it was mid afternoon, she had run some errands and the last one was to drop a card off at the post office. She had driven past this one many times, and smiled each time at the tiny old building. The white paint was thin and the wood unapologetically snuck out to feel the sun’s warmth. She pulled into the dirt lot and parked her truck, grabbed the envelope and walked into a time capsule inside the little building. Everything looked original from many decades ago, and the clerk managed a wispy smile as she exchanged the blue envelope fora receipt that printed out of a machine that appeared awkwardly out of the place on the old wooden counter.

Day 4 of Quitting
If this is how sobriety feels, maybe it’s better to go through life a little buzzed… this, along with other hits like, I want to kill myself, I wish I was dead, and I’m going to throw myself off a bridge have been the only thoughts on rotation these past few days. I promise myself that if, in a month, I still feel like this (‘this’ meaning despondent, full of rage, and simultaneously numb) I can go back to smoking. Until mid-February though? Nicotine is off the table.
