Simplification

He was a simple man
with simple ideas
that rattled loosely
in a simple mind.
I was not
a simple enough find.
Thus, his simple mind
sought out to simplify.
In this equation,
I was neither x nor y,
not quadratic in function
a sum of parts
he just couldn’t divide.
Instead of changing
the formula to make
his understanding multiply,
he subtracted my value
till I was nullified.
Now in this grand scheme of numbers,
a new factor takes me in
to his parenthetical persuasion,
making both of our values increase
on an unending basis
towards plot lines uncharted
by any known wavelength.
He unlike the denominator before,
understands fully well
that a person’s worth
is not to be negated -
that a fraction of a person
cannot be done away with.
For together, we can become a solution
beyond known mathematical phrases -
leaving the absolutes behind
with the graphs others have made for us.
