Simple Solace

an enduring comfort

Ribbons of flame Pirouette like dancers upon a marble stage.

Every sauté sends beacons of light to chase the cold away.

Blankets of warmth from their golden glow wrap around me

Like the embrace of a friend from a bygone age.

Nestled upon a throne of velvet upholstery,

I remember the laughter of youth

Sinking deeper into downy blankets and a cherished memory,

I cradle my mug of amber delight, as ivory threads swirl out of sight

While lost in a past of schoolgirl giggles and childish games,

Bella sashays upon the floor chasing daydreams away.

Her rhythmic purring abounds upon my lap.

She melts her honey coat into the blanket she tames.

A humming engine of steady heat, coaxing my mug aside

Yielding, I stroke her silken fur to the pattern of her rumble.

My thoughts trickle afar like the receding waters of low tide.

I will sit here until she wakes and watch the blaze ballet.

Embers aglow, the lights flicker low

I will sit here until she wakes and watch the blaze ballet.

Eyelids like lead, I nod my head

I will sit here until she wakes and watch the blaze ballet.

Swaddled in warmth, my strength starts to wane

Determination gives way

As I doze to the blaze ballet.

There's something about the wild beauty of Maine's natural landscape that shapes you. With three young kids to raise and a whole state to explore, boredom, never finds me. 33 and counting. These are the best years.
