Silenced Goddesses

I embrace each moment of my culture

And encompass it all

My power comes from being a woman of colour

But its not as easy as it sounds;

The silences of my ancestors

are shared through my art.

My uniqueness is embodied within my melanin

My power is tied in being a woman of colour

My mind is my biggest asset - as is my heart

But my voice, is the most influential of them all.

I break the silences of my ancestors;

As their lost stories, ambitions and dreams

lay buried within the ground

-Lost souls

Tamed Goddesses-

And their silenced stories.

I am the by-product of it all

The one who’s purpose it is to write art, speak my mind and share it with the world.

And as I reject everything I am told

They look down and a smile they hold

Instead of vengeance I choose the untaken path

I go through life so differently,

Sometimes others laugh.

Whilst the grayness and dampness dominate the falls

I know there is a colorful light at the end of it all.

May my descendants reminisce the empress

who unlocked latched doors;

As I turn the gold rustic keys

All the ’no’s’ and notions to fulfill the role of a housewife

Throw themselves into the black abyss

For I was destined to fly high and to always dismiss.

And as I break through the patriarchy

My ancestors continue to smile upon me

There’ll be no more burials of colorful stories.

Sometimes I fall, for the responsibility is high

‘I was destined to do this’ I repeat

And they no longer sigh.

May I forever be the rule-breaker and the one striving for more.

I know there will be light at the end

And my descendants will commend

For it takes a courageous soul to take a leap of faith this big.

The silenced Goddesses are on my side

And we stand together with pride

I shall be remembered as the gold empress who broke the dark generational curse.
