"Shhhh... You Can’t Say That"
A poem about staying quiet when it hurts to.

I tell myself — shhhh... you can't say that.
No matter how wrong my girl is,
I say “I’m sorry. My fault.”
Just to keep us on track.
I tell myself — shhhh... you can't say that.
When my best friend says
his ex has called,
You can't say — it's a trap.
I tell myself — shhhh... you can't say that.
No matter how many times she asks,
how she looks in the dress...
You can't say — fat.
I tell myself — shhhh... you can't say that.
No matter how my boss talks to me,
I can't yell at him back.
I tell myself — shhhh... you can't say that.
No matter how many times
my son backtalks me,
I can't tell him
I want to twist his neck
until it goes... snap.
I tell myself — shhhh... you can't say that.
Sometimes it’s better
to bite your tongue—
and that’s simply facts.
