He lived seventeen hours

-yet, still I became the ghost.

Once she said, "You were born out of wedlock-

That makes you a bastard."

I retorted, "He was born out of wedlock-

that makes him a bastard."

The burn and bruise from her slap

etched in my mind, my soul, my heart.

When I reached for wisdom, or worse, her love

a scar on my mind, my soul, my heart.

All I wanted was a mother.

All she mourned was a son.
