She Battles the Daylight Hours

Often into the late night

She’s gifted with the ability of self sabotage,

Bottling the guilt in a vat of destruction,

Recycled on a daily, no make that an hourly basis,

Filling her time achingly in the stride of self induction.

😩

Blistering torment rides high within her chest,

Scalding her thoughts, a range of high stress,

Hiding behind the smile that graces her face,

Her anxiety heightening into cunning duress.

😩

Struggling with the weight of her greatest fears,

Sure she’s to be exposed in the dark of the night,

Witnessed by her demons solely incarcerated,

Soured within the shadows by a truth seeking spotlight.

😩

Her shoulders are broad with the factual necessities,

Knowing the tides can turn at the drop of a hat,

Questioning her beliefs as totally ridiculous,

Still her heart beating rapidly sets a caveat.

😩

Digressing her pathway seldomly succeeds,

Sure that her heart bleeds on her sleeve,

Judgement day is near, as she foretold,

Bellowing her faults to all who will believe.

😩

Passion for her mistakes tortures her mind,

Slipping into nightmares if she dares to sleep,

Her breath hiccups on a ghostly sigh,

Totally exhausted at the price of its upkeep.

😩

The light has been drained from her future years,

As her struggles gain momentum on the uphill runs,

Thoughts on repetition until the fullness of time,

Feeling devastated but still she sticks to her guns.

😩

Bold tears rain upon her detriment,

Sacrificing her heart for a minute sense of peace,

Her feelings drooling all over her dreams,

And still she fights to make it all cease.

😩

Soldiering on in a gutter of despair,

Wondering why she’s crippled in this way,

Where did she fail so deeply to deserve

The never ending torture of which her thoughts portray?

😩

As she rises up stronger than ever before,

The torment expands exponentially,

Riding along her powerful constraints,

Wiping out her trust with broken confidentiality.

😩

It’s not within her nature to ever give up,

Although she desires the prospect of a much needed break,

Forgiveness is an answer she hasn’t yet found,

But she desperately needs a solution to her constant heartache.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

Guilt & regret, compounded by the understanding that attempting to make amends would only make things worse, that time is needed, though it feels inadequate to the task. How do we forgive ourselves when we carry such intractable burdens that will not suffer forgiveness?

  • Forgiveness is an answer she hasn't yet found. That hit so hard because I've never been able to forgive the ones who hurt me. I know in order to move on, I need to forgive but I just can't at the moment. Loved your poem so much my friend!
