Serendipity of Guava Foraging

Remains a fond memory

Of all fruits, guava is special.

My childhood house

had many guava trees.

They offered us snacks year-round.

We were never hungry,

munching day and night.

In immigrant life,

it became a rare commodity,

and I relied on nostalgia

to remember those

abundant guava days.

But one day,

in the new neighborhood,

I was walking with my toddler

when I saw a guava tree,

planted as part of edible landscaping.

The guavas were in season.

We picked as many as we could,

green skin, pink flesh.

She sat on a boulder, under the sycamore

and munched the foraged guava.

I had mine, savoring each bite,

with gratitude

It was serendipity,

and made for a lovely memory.
