Two years ago, I wrote an article on Vocal about different ways to celebrate self-care. I wanted to create the list as simply as possible. In 2019 the word self-care became a buzzword on social media. Every meme, caption, story, and post reflected what self-care meant. During that time, I was learning what it meant for me. The first time I ever heard that word was during one of my therapy sessions.
I was so confused about what to do that I found myself getting frustrated. My mind only saw two colors, and they were black and white. I wanted my therapist to tell me what to do instead of figuring it out to see what was best for my current state of mind. After sessions and years later, I finally got what that word meant to me and how I use it in my everyday life. Instead of writing a detail-oriented piece, I wanted to switch it up and explain in poetry what it means to me now.
Self-Care Is
Getting enough sleep after a long day of work
Feeling well-rested to chase your dreams.
Clearing your mind from negative thoughts
Taking care of your hygiene to wash away your sorrows
Putting your phone down to look people in the eye
Doing nothing because you deserve it.
Drinking your favorite tea or coffee from your favorite cup
Reading a book to embrace creativity and imagination.
Taking a walk to get your creative juices flowing
Enjoying nature because it's beautiful
Naps rejuvenate the mind and the body.
Self-Care is
Relaxing because your body will thank you later
Calling a friend to cheer someone else up
Letting go because holding on wears you down.
Starting something new to learn more about you
Saying no because no is a complete sentence and doesn't require an explanation
Creating boundaries to tame your sanity
Taking accountability to let go of bad habits and create new ones
Showing gratitude because others took their last breath
A peace of mind because you deserve it
