Seeing Her Again

I spied her the other day,

A whip-poor-will,

Nestled beneath youthful conifers

In a bed of needle, leaf, and debris.

There in the shallow

Two marbled lavender-grey eggs,

Always tended, lay waiting

To burst out new life.

Mated for life, my whip-poor-will,

Became Chuck-will's poor widow,

As I watched her beloved,

The nightjar, take flight.

About the Creator

Rebecca A Hyde Gonzales

I love to write. I have a deep love for words and language; a budding philologist (a late bloomer according to my father). I have been fascinated with the construction of sentences and how meaning is derived from the order of words.
