Sea Turtle Lens

A Poem

By Kailee ThomasPublished 7 years ago 1 min read

Swimming along the current

What is that I see?

It looks like a delicious jellyfish

The perfect lunch for me

After a long morning

Of sunbathing on the beach

I am starving for this jellyfish

That’s just beyond my reach

Swimming through the salty water

I truly love the sea

I couldn’t find a better place

For my turtle family and me

I come up on the jellyfish

And take a great big bite

Something must be wrong with him

He did not put up a single fight

Wait a minute, that’s not right

What on earth could this be?

This is not a jellyfish

This thing does not come from the sea

This snack is not so satisfying

Something isn’t right

I swore that was a jellyfish

What exactly did I bite?

It appears to be a jellyfish

With ‘thank you for shopping’ on its side

Suddenly I realize,

As I open my eyes wide

That this is not a jellyfish

This is not a snack for me

This comes from the human world

It does not belong in my sea

There’s a knot in my stomach

My insides begin to bend

I realize in this moment

That this is where I end

How did this get here

In the ocean that I love?

It was sent by the humans

From their plastic world above

I am not the first sea turtle

And will not be the last

Unless the human species

Fixes this problem they’ve created, fast
