School's Out For the Summer
A sonnet: three parts commiseration, one part promise.
The last school days drag long in rising heat:
the students limp with hot and tired bones,
the teachers just as weary, just as beat,
scolding over notes and buzzing phones.
Like a magnifying glass and ant,
the classrooms wilt through windowpanes and sun.
The class's hamster even starts to pant -
all the kids are ten degrees past done.
There's tests to give, and and things to learn; the year
has not yet started to wind down. But when
the teacher asks if she is being clear,
no hands get raised; all minds have spaced out - zen!
Don't fear, dear children! Summer's coming fast -
so soon, that final bell will ring at last.
