Saying Goodbye
To put it bluntly, to say what I think,
I’m tired deep in my soul and pen it in ink.
For the visitor comes unexpectedly sinister,
Closing loved ones’ eyes, verdict to administer.
There’s been many who’ve answered its call,
Young, old, weak, strong, it has taken them all.
From this life, this place suspended in time,
It wants me to say it's okay, offered no sign.
I can’t find the words beneath this facade,
A person crying, tearful, completely unshod.
I can’t walk this cobblestone path much longer,
Knowing that others will no longer linger.
Hearts full of sorrow as their journeys have ended,
Causing my eyes to swell, and my world to be blinded.
Be gone with you you creature from the shadows,
A creature that takes without asking, lives to dispose.
My life shouts “I’ve had enough of this peril,”
The snatching and taking, it’s all so surreal.
How many more must I watch disappear,
That question’s answer is still very unclear.
Until the last goodbye is whispered,
At the final resting in my mind it’s pictured.
We’ll simply say our prayers until their passing,
As life fills up with anticipation amassing.
For now, I’ll wipe my face with sorrow’s tissues,
And toss them aside for others have no clues.
My swollen eye and my grieving soul some ignore,
I feel untold emptiness as they walk out the door.
